How To - Students

Sign Up:

There are three ways to sign up for a Red Rover profile:

Sign up with Facebook Connect
On the Login Page, click "Sign Up," then choose "Connect with Facebook." You’ll need to authorize Red Rover to access your account, but don’t worry, you will only share what you want to share on Red Rover, and we don't post anything to your Facebook page. Then, complete the signup wizard steps to create your profile.

Sign up without Facebook Connect
If you don’t have a Facebook account, or don’t want to link your Facebook account to your Red Rover profile, you can sign up without it. Just click “Sign Up” on your institution’s homepage, and the signup wizard will lead you through the four steps of the signup process.

Txt to Join
Text your email address only in the body of a text message to your school’s directory phone number. We’ll send you an email confirmation, and you can complete your profile when you have a chance to sit down at a computer, you mover/shaker, you.

Pro Tip: There more interests you add to your profile, the more relevant Red Rover’s content and recommendations will be.

My Profile:

Editing Profile Information
After you create your profile, you can change your information any time. To edit basic information, like your name, email address, password, or location, just go to the “My Profile” page, and hover over the profile information under your profile pic, then click “Edit Profile.” Be sure to save your changes by clicking the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the screen.

Changing or Adding a Profile Pic
Your profile picture makes it easier for people who already know you to find you, and for people you met online to recognize you in real life. So don’t be afraid to show your smiling face, and make your Red Rover community more personal.

To change your profile pic (or to add one if you haven't already), just go to "My Profile," then click on the profile pic. A box will pop up to guide you through the upload.

Adding, Changing, and Removing Weblinks
Weblinks point Red Rover to your content elsewhere on the web, so we can pull it in to the activity feed. To add weblinks to your profile, go to "My Profile" then click "Add My Websites." If you've already added weblinks and you want to change them, you'll see a button that says "Edit My Websites" instead, and from there, you can make changes to your links.

Adding, Changing, and Removing Interests
On the "My Profile" Page, click on "Interests" in the column under your profile picture. Then, add interests by entering them in the text box, and edit or remove tags by clicking on them.

Find People:

Using the Find People Page
By default, the Find People Page shows you everyone in your network who shares interests with you, with the closest matches at the top. Interests you share appear in blue, and everything else appears in gray.

You can click “See Other Interests” for a member to see every interest that they’ve listed, or click on the primary filter buttons at the top of the member list to only see people who are in your location, major, class year, etc.

Use the Search box to find people who share specific interests. For example, if you enter “cross-stitching” in the seach box, you will only see users who have that interest.

From the Find People Page, you can see members’ Red Rover profiles, or contact them through email, Facebook, Twitter, or any other web tools they’ve connected to their profile.

Activity:

The Activity Page pulls in members’ posts from around the web, so you can see everything in Red Rover. For example, if you add your Twitter account to your profile, your tweets will be pulled in to the institution’s Activity Page, and other members can read, comment and like them within Red Rover. It’s an easy way to increase traffic on your blog, YouTube channel, or any web tools you already use. You can also share your LinkedIn profile to start building your professional network with Red Rover.

Sorting the Institution Activity Page
When you sign up for a Red Rover account, you answer a few questions that cover general information, like your location and your major in school. We call these categories “Primary Filters,” and they help us to recommend the most relevant content to you. On the Activity Page, you can sort by those Primary Filters, so instead of seeing everyone all of the activity in your institution, you can choose to see only the activity from people in your major or location. Just click the buttons to filter the Activity Stream.

Searching within the Institution Activity Page
You can search the posts by tag, or do a full-text search to find interesting content. Use the "breadcrumb trail" at the top of the Activity Stream to remove search terms. For example, when you search for "soccer," then "baseball," you'll see everyone who has both soccer and baseball listed in their interests. If you decide that you only want to see the people who are interested in baseball, click the "x" next to soccer at the top of the Activity stream to remove it from your search.

Liking and Commenting in the Institution Activity Page
Click "Like" below any Activity post to give the original poster props, or enter a comment in the empty box below their post to respond. They'll get an email letting them know about your comment, so they can carry on the conversation.

Flagging Items in the Institution Activity Page
Users can flag items that they think are inappropriate for the Activity stream. Flagged items are hidden from the person who flags them.

Groups:

Red Rover lets anyone start, join, or lead a group, whether it’s an official campus club, an informal study group, or a weekly pizza party. Here’s how you can get started. Already lead a Red Rover Group? Take a look at the Student Leader How-tos for even more info.

Joining Groups
Red Rover makes joining groups easy. First, you receive group suggestions based on your interests at the end of your signup process, and you’re placed in a few default groups based on general categories like location and major. You can join groups any time while you’re in Red Rover, by clicking the “Join” button on the group page, or the the blue “+” button next to a group’s name in the popup that appears when you click on a tag.

Leaving Groups
If you’ve decided to leave a group, just go to the group page and click the blue “Leave” button. You’ll be removed from the group’s membership immediately.

Text to Join a Group
If you know a group’s unique hashtag,* you can join with a text message, anytime, anywhere. Just send a text to your institution’s directory phone number with the group’s hashtag in the body of the text message. If you already have an account in the directory associated with your phone number, you’ll be added automagically. If you don’t have an account, you’ll receive a text prompting you to create one.

*Hashtags are the pound symbol (#) followed by a combination of letters and/or numbers.

Group Page:

Lead a Group
If you are a member of a group, you can request a promotion to leader status. Just click “Become a Leader” on a group’s homepage, and the current leader(s) will receive an email notifying them of the request. As soon as they approve you, you’ll be good to go. If a group doesn’t have a leader yet, you can step up and take charge right away—you’ll be promoted instantly when you click “Become a Leader.”

Group Pages
Each group’s Red Rover page has four tabs:
Members - A list of group members
Wall - A message board for group-related discussion
Info - View the group’s description, category, tags, and official hashtag
Activity - Displays the web activity of all of the group members.

Hashtags
Hashtags are the pound symbol (#) followed by a combination of letters and/or numbers. We use them to easily identify groups so that new members can join by text message, but you can also use hashtags to identify content about the group around the web. If I were a member of a group with the hashtag #redrover, I could include that tag in twitter posts or blog post tags to help other members find my group-related content. Find the group’s hashtag by clicking on the Info tab.

Click on any tag on the page to see how many people have the tag, as well as a list of groups. Click the number of people to see a list of everyone with the tag.

Click on any gray tag and click "add" to add it to your own tags.

If you see a tag that needs to be edited or removed, click it, and then click "Flag" to submit to the network admin for review.
